Chapter 1 :
Chapters 1 and 2
Two boys, Ralph and 'Piggy', meet in a jungle after surviving a plane crash
Ralph is delighted to find himself free from adults in a tropical paradise, but Piggy is anxious about how they will be rescued
They find a conch shell and use it as a trumpet to call anyone else who might have survived the crash
Boys ranging from about six to twelve years old appear on the beach
One group of choir boys arrives together, led by their prefect Jack Merridew
The boys elect Ralph as their chief, which infuriates Jack who is used to being dominant
A little boy makes everyone uneasy by saying he has seen a terrifying beast.
Ralph, Jack and another older boy, Simon, explore their surroundings and confirm they are on an island
While exploring they come across a piglet which Jack tries to kill. This makes him determined to kill a pig in future
Ralph suggests making a fire on the mountain in the hope that someone might see it and rescue them
Chapter 2 :
Chapters 3 and 4
Some time has passed. Jack has been unsuccessful hunting pigs
Ralph can't get the other boys to help build shelters. He begins to resent Jack for not helping out more
Simon helps the little boys to pick fruit in the jungle
Jack decides to paint his face with clay and charcoal when he goes hunting
Ralph and Piggy notice smoke out to sea and realise it must be a ship
The signal fire they lit on the mountain has gone out
The boys who were supposed to guard the fire have gone off hunting with Jack, who has finally managed to kill a pig
Ralph is furious at them but Jack is ecstatic that he has finally succeeded in killing a pig
The hunt is retold and re-enacted by the hunters
Ralph calls another assembly
Chapter 3 :
Chapters 5 and 6
At the solemn meeting that follows Ralph tries to reassert the rules
He tries to end all discussion of a possible beast on the island
Jack challenges Ralph's leadership
The meeting disintegrates and Ralph considers giving up the leadership
Simon and Piggy urge him not to do so, fearing that it would lead to Jack becoming chief
That night an air battle takes place far above them in the sky but none of the boys are aware of it
A dead pilot and his parachute land on the mountain
The boys guarding the fire hear the sound of the parachute flapping in the wind
Not knowing what is making the sound, they flee back to the others saying they have encountered the beast
As day breaks the boys agree to search the island for the beast
Chapter 4 :
Chapters 7 and 8
On their way back towards the mountain the boys hunt a boar
Ralph injures it with his spear and feels some of the pride and excitement that Jack and the others have felt when hunting
The boys re-enact the brief, unsuccessful hunt with Robert as the boar
The boys are in a frenzy and the re-enactment stops just before it gets violent
Ralph, Jack and Roger continue up the mountain to find the beast while the others head back to the camp
It is dark by now so when they come across the dead pilot they do not know what it is and flee in terror back to the camp
Ralph suggests they build their signal fire on the beach instead because the 'beast' was so near to their previous fire
Jack challenges Ralph's leadership but when the others don't depose Ralph, Jack leaves the camp
Some of the other older boys follow Jack and he becomes leader of their new 'tribe'
After Jack's group kills another pig, they leave its head as an offering for the beast
Chapter 5 :
Chapters 9 and 10
Simon has had a fit after his experience with the Lord of the Flies
He stumbles across the island, finds the dead pilot and decides to tell the others that 'the beast' is harmless
Ralph and Piggy go to Jack's feast to get some meat
Jack is being treated as some kind of god
A thunderstorm breaks and Jack draws all those at the feast into a dance
At the height of the dancing and chanting Simon crawls out of the jungle
The boys mistake Simon for the beast and kill him
The next day Ralph and Piggy become aware of the horror and shame of the night before
Ralph has trouble motivating the twins to keep the fire alight.
Jack's tribe moves to Castle Rock, which they guard like a fort
Chapter 6 :
Chapters 11 and 12
Some of the boys go back to Castle Rock to get Piggy's glasses to start a fire
There are moments of physical violence between Ralph and Jack
In between, Ralph tries to reason with the savages - all painted up now - that they need to try to get rescued
At Jack's command, Sam and Eric are captured and tied up by the savages
Roger rolls a large boulder which knocks Piggy onto the rocks below, killing him
The conch - which was being held by Piggy - is smashed as well
The tribe then comes after Ralph who flees into the jungle
Ralph comes across the pig's head on the stake and smashes the skull
He returns to Castle Rock that night and finds Sam and Eric guarding it
They warn him that Jack has ordered for him to be hunted down the next day
