The land around Rome yielded many crops such as wheat, emmer, barley and olives
Between 400 and 284 BC, the Romans brought the Italian peninsula under their control

Religion in the society
The Romans were polytheistic, they worshipped many gods
Official state gods and unofficial household spirits were worshipped in Rome
Augustus introduced the worship of deceased emperors
The Imperial period saw an increase in the number of foreign cults
Christianity was adopted by the Roman Emperor Constantine

Work: urban and rural
Many Romans who lived in cities were employed in crafts and trades
Food preparation was a popular occupation
The most common crafts included carpentry, pottery and metal working
The majority of work in Roman cities and farms was done by slaves
Rome was dependent on agricultural production

Daily life of women
Roman women were not considered equal to men
Women could inherit land but were not allowed to own property without a male guardian
Women were regarded with respect if they had proved to be wise and devoted mothers
Women's duties were to oversee the daily running of the home and care of the family
Women were free to participate in religious worship

Warfare and the life of soldiers
Rome had one of the most effective and efficient armies in Western history
The army was reformed by the military commander Gaius Marius
The army was organised around small groups of highly disciplined soldiers
Campaigning was done during the spring and summer months
The Roman soldier lived a dangerous and adventurous life
